Dental discoloration, such as yellowed or darker teeth, is typically not a cause for concern. If you’ve noticed that your child’s teeth appear to be discolored, discuss the issue with a pediatric dentist to understand the causes. In the meantime, here’s what you should know about this issue to prepare for an informed conversation.

What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Tooth discoloration can either be a result of intrinsic or extrinsic factors.

pediatric dentistMost commonly, off-color enamel is a result of extrinsic (external) conditions, such as infrequent flossing and brushing. When combined with a diet rich in heavily pigmented or erosive foods, such as berries, soda, fruit juices, and red sauces, it’s especially likely for the teeth to yellow. Certain medications, including iron supplements and antiseptics, could also cause yellowing.

With intrinsic factors, the problem is caused by underlying conditions. For example, trauma from an injury can cause capillaries to burst, leading to a dark hue that stems from deep within the tooth. Congenital disorders, such as metabolic conditions and celiac disease, can also alter the color of enamel.

How Is This Addressed?

The treatment for tooth discoloration will depend on the cause. If external factors are to blame, improving home dental care and avoiding foods that cause discoloration is helpful. Prioritizing teeth-healthy snacks, such as fibrous fruits and vegetables and dairy products, may also improve both the health and appearance of the teeth.

For discoloration caused by intrinsic factors, a pediatric dentist may recommend teeth whitening or veneers, depending on your child’s age. While congenital conditions typically can’t be avoided, controlling fluoride intake in young children can prevent discoloration caused by fluorosis.
