Many people see spring as a time for renewal—and that includes giving the house a thorough deep-cleaning. Yet, one area that often gets overlooked is the HVAC system. Unless it's time for new AC installation, both professional and homeowner maintenance is required to prepare the unit for summer. Luckily, you can get it ready by adding these three steps to your spring cleaning to-do list.

3 Ways to Prepare Your HVAC for Spring

1. Schedule a Professional Service

While there are many spring cleaning tasks you can complete on your own, your annual AC tuneup is best left to the experts. The complex process involves a full system inspection and the lubrication and calibration of parts.

This helps the system function optimally as well as identify the need for repairs sooner rather than later. As a result, the simple step promotes longevity and reduces the need for premature AC installation.

The AC condenser houses the compressor, cooling fin and tubes, and a fan. Unfortunately, an accumulation of debris around the exterior unit typically occurs during fall and spring.

If petals or leaves are pulled into the system when it's turned on, there's a risk of damage to the equipment. For that reason, completely remove all buildup within a two-foot radius.

3. Prioritize Filter & Ductwork Maintenance

There are two main HVAC factors involved in indoor air quality: the filter and the ducts. While the filter is changed during the professional maintenance inspection, these visits are usually biannual. The filter needs to be changed at least every three months—more often if you have pets, smoke, or have a respiratory condition.

You should also schedule regular duct cleaning appointments. However, during the in-between time, wipe the vents leading to your ducts regularly. Vacuuming just inside the duct can further prevent buildup within the system.

To make sure airflow is not restricted, don’t block your vents with furniture.
