In rainy and humid conditions, algae, moss, and lichens grow on damp residential roofing systems. Mold also grows on saturated and rotting materials. The fungus spreads quickly and eats away at the membrane, compromising the structural integrity of the entire system. To avoid severe damage and the need for roof replacement, below are tips to spot mold and how to tackle the problem.

How to Detect Mold on Your Roof

Mold has a noticeable stench similar to the smell of wet socks or rotting wood. Open the windows in the attic or on the upper floors of the house to sniff for the aroma. From the window, you might also be able to see black, brown, or dark green patches of mold on the roof shingles.

As the mold feeds on the rotting wooden substrate, leaks and water damage inside the house could point to a problem. In the attic, look for water stains, peeling paint or plaster, and discoloration on walls and the ceiling. Mold will also form quickly on rotting beams and rafters.

How to Remedy the Problem

Making the residential roofing system less hospitable to botanical growth could prevent future mold problems. As algae and other plants grow on damp surfaces, trim back overhanging tree branches. This way, sunlight can dry the membrane quickly after it rains. So the runoff can drain, keep the gutters clean. To improve air circulation and prevent moisture buildup, a roofer can install ridge vents. They can also install zinc strips under the row of shingles along the roof ridge. When the rainwater and zinc make contact, it creates a chemical reaction that prevents mold growth.
