Septic systems are delicate and can be a bit tricky to take care of, especially if you’ve never dealt with one before. Unfortunately, septic tank failure is much more than an inconvenience, as it may put your health at risk and result in costly repairs. As such, it’s important to learn how to keep your system in good condition to prevent serious problems. Here are a few best practices to keep in mind for using a septic system.

Do:

Have your septic tank pumped regularly.

When household waste goes through a septic system, the solids remain in the bottom of the septic tank while the liquids are diverted into the drain field. Over time, the solids will continue to build up, and if the tank isn’t emptied periodically, they’ll leak out. This can result in messy sewer backups, health and environmental hazards, and a premature system replacement.

It’s generally recommended that septic tanks be cleaned out every three to five years, but more frequent pumping may be necessary, depending on the size of your tank and how much wastewater your household produces.

Be mindful of water usage.

Consider installing high-efficiency toilets, showerheads, dishwashers, and washing machines, and find other ways to conserve as much water as possible. Also, repair plumbing leaks right away.

Don’t:

Plant near the drain field.

Ensure trees and shrubs are planted adequate distances from the drain field to prevent their roots from growing into your septic system and clogging the lines or causing damage. It’s wise not to plant anything close to your system aside from grass. If there are already trees near the drain field, it’s a smart idea to have them removed.

Drive or park over the system.

You should know exactly where your septic system is located on your property. Never drive vehicles or heavy equipment directly over it or use the drain field as an area to park. This can compact the soil, which reduces the field’s ability to effectively treat wastewater. It may also crush the piping sitting the ground.
