The filter of your HVAC system plays a vital role in protecting its performance and longevity. Replacing it regularly—ideally every three or four months—promotes proper airflow and keep the system running efficiently. While you can choose to take care of this task yourself or with the help of an HVAC contractor, it’s important to select the appropriate filter for your system.

How to Choose an HVAC Filter

1. Size

The larger the filter, the more dust and debris it can collect. However, only one size of filter can fit your HVAC system Most filters are about an inch thick, though this can vary between models. Measure your current filter to determine the proper size for your system.

2. MERV Rating

HVAC contractorThe minimum energy reporting value (MERV) rating determines how well the filter can hold back contaminants. This scale goes to 16 and is referenced in four tiers. With a rating between 1 and 4, the filter will stop between 60–80% of contaminants. A rating between 4–8 boosts that range from 80–95%. The final two tiers top out at 95% and 98% respectively.

Higher doesn’t equal better, however. The higher the rating, the harder the the unit will have to work to push air through the filter. Anything above an 8 is usually reserved for HVAC units at work sites full of smoke or smog. Choosing the right number—usually between 5 and 8—gives you the right balance of airflow and filtration to achieve energy-efficient performance.

3. Reusable or Disposable

The final quality to consider in a filter is whether you want a disposable or reusable option. Disposable are the most popular and usually the easiest to find. However, check your owners manual or contact your local HVAC contractor to see if your unit has any compatible reusable filters you can simply clean instead of throwing out, so you can save money on replacements.
