You may find that the work that used to be so exciting and fulfilling is no longer something you enjoy doing. Perhaps you used to jump out of bed in the morning to get ready for work but have recently started to dread the sound of your alarm each day. Sometimes, you have to take a few steps back and assess where you stand. Is it the work you do, or is it that you just crave change? Maybe you can work it out on your own, or maybe you need the help of a life coach. Whatever your challenges are, when you’ve lost your sense of purpose with your work, you can use these tips to get out of being stuck in an unhappy rut.

How to Make Work Meaningful for You Again

1. Own Your Contributions

When you succeed at work, celebrate it; even if you finish a project that seemed to plod along, take time to reflect on your success before you move on to the next one. Make a list or keep a journal to briefly document your accomplishments and your pride in them. If you just move from one thing to another without ever having a breather between, you’re sure to burn out.

2. Take a Break

Talk to a friend or a life coach about your feelings and the direction you need in your life. You may just need a break to recharge and get a fresh perspective.

3. Explore Giving Back

Find meaning elsewhere if you’re having trouble feeling fulfilled through your job. This could mean a variety of things. Volunteer for causes you care about, offer to help others, or mentor a family member or friend.

If time is too tight, you can give financially to help support organizations that do work you’re passionate about. Giving to charity and contributing to the bigger picture has many psychological benefits

4. Identify Your Values

Figure out what gets you fired up in a positive way. Discover what you’re passionate about and what’s most important to you. Your current work might not be your dream job, but does it allow you to pursue your dreams outside of it? If so, you might consult with someone such as a life coach or mentor to start creating a structure that’s more meaningful for you.
