One of the last things you need on a winter day is for your heating system to break down. HVAC problems are common during the winter months and often occur when the unit overworks to heat your home. After you call for furnace repairs, here are a handful of ways you can stay warm indoors while you wait.

How to Stay Warm While Waiting for Furnace Repairs

1. Use Humidifiers & Space Heaters

furnace repairsDry air makes your home feel colder, so add moisture to the air with a humidifier. Set it to about 40 percent to condition the air without putting your property at risk of mold growth. Use electric space heaters to keep your bedrooms and bathrooms warm. Be careful not to plug too many into the same power strip.

2. Run Heat-Generating Appliances

Run your dryer and dishwasher and cook meals in your oven to raise the temperature of your home. When you’re finished, shut these appliances off, but leave their doors open to allow the warm air to circulate through your space.

3. Keep Doors Shut & Seal Gaps

Try not to open your front, back, or side doors too often. Additionally, prevent heat loss by adding weatherstripping to the undersides of doors, and seal any gaps and cracks around windows with caulk. If you don’t have weatherstripping or caulk, stuff your extra towels or blankets into the cracks instead.

4. Wear Layers

While you wait for your HVAC contractor, bundle up to stay warm. Wear wool socks, long underwear, pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and a sweater. Cuddle up with your family, make some hot chocolate, and distract yourself from the cold with a movie.
