Severe weather events pose hazards for everyone, and pets are no exception. While you likely have plans in place to keep your family and home safe during a major storm, it’s essential to also think about any animals you have. After a natural disaster, roadways to veterinarians' offices may be impassable at first. Here’s how you can ensure your pet is well cared for.

How to Keep Pets Safe in Severe Weather Events

1. Give Them a Calm, Safe Space

Severe weather can produce some noises that may be frightening to pets, including howling wind and snapping branches. Anxious pets may be more likely to flee or hurt themselves in the process, so give them a safe area where they can go during the height of the storm. Some pets like bathrooms or closets, for instance. If your animal gets especially nervous, consider asking your veterinarian about anti-anxiety solutions.

2. Ensure They Have Proper ID

veterinarianEven if your pet seems unlikely to run, having them microchipped is the best way to increase the odds they’ll be returned to you in the event they should ever get loose. Again, pets may be especially likely to run away if they get scared during storms.

To that end, you should also make sure they have a sturdy collar with a tag featuring your phone number. Keep pictures of your pet on hand as well, which you can share among the community in case they get out.

3. Create an Animal Kit

Just as you would for your other family members, set up a disaster survival kit for your pets. Include a week’s supply of food and water, as well as any medications they take regularly. You might also want to ask your veterinarian which first aid supplies you should have on hand, such as gauze, nonstick bandages, and antibiotic spray.
