Adding a simple feature like a path can transform a few flower beds into a garden with easy access for viewing and watering your plants. A pathway can also help divide areas of your garden from each other, like vegetables, bee-friendly plants, and flowers. When they're well-designed with proper hardscaping, garden paths combine beauty and function, while improving your home’s curb appeal.

What Features Should a Garden Path Have?

1. Hardscaping Materials

How you use your garden will factor into how it should be designed. Paths that will get a lot of use, or that lead to other functional spaces, should be able to withstand significant wear and tear, making brick or paving stones and ideal option. Gravel paths will not disrupt plant growth but could potentially affect your garden’s drainage. Consider the material that works best for your needs and weather.

To get the most out of your path, consider making it wide enough for at least two people. This will leave enough room to bring a wheelbarrow with garden materials around your property.

2. Plants & Flowers

hardscapingThe vegetation you plant should complement your path. For example, wildflowers look better with rustic cobblestone because they both have natural patterns. Woodland gardens full of ferns and hostas that grow straight, detailed designs can benefit from a brick path laid in an intricate herringbone pattern.

Paths don't have to have defined boundaries. Trailing flowers, like the sweet alyssum, are close to the ground and grow outwards instead of upwards. Vines, poppy mallows, and creeping phlox are other cost-effective ground cover plants that will cover the edges of your hardscaping.

3. Seating & Lighting

Adding a bench to your garden allows you to gaze at the landscape. Create a little nook off to the side where you can sit and read a book or enjoy a cup of tea. If you want to view your flowers at night, place an LED strip along the boundaries of the path and your garden, or add small hanging lights to brighten the yard.
