Chemotherapy is one of the most common treatment options for pediatric cancer. Unfortunately, it comes with a variety of unpleasant side effects. If you’re helping your little one through treatment, here’s an overview of how to keep them comfortable.

3 Effects of Chemotherapy & How to Manage Them

1. Nausea

Certain chemotherapy drugs, especially those administered at high dosages, can cause nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Doctors often prescribe anti-nausea medications to pediatric cancer patients, who are more prone to this symptom.

At home, you can also minimize some of the discomfort by giving your child several smaller meals so their stomach has time to digest. Avoid any foods with strong smells, such as fish or fried fare, and encourage your little one to drink water throughout the day.

2. Fatigue

Chemotherapy destroys some healthy cells as it attacks cancerous ones, which means the body has to expend a lot of energy to recover. This, coupled with pain-relief medications, often causes patients to feel tired or fatigued.

3. Hair Loss

Chemotherapy can also attack cells around the hair roots, causing locks to fall out. This can impact a child’s mood and self-esteem.

You can’t prevent this side effect, but you may be able to slow or minimize it by being gentle with your child’s hair. Only use soft-bristled brushes and avoid heat treatments and styling products. Some kids also find it helpful to shave their heads or cut their hair short so they don’t have to experience constant fallout. Wigs and headscarves may also boost their confidence.
