During the spring and summer, homeowners no longer need to use their fireplaces. Improve your home’s energy efficiency and air quality by closing your chimney once the temperatures get warm. Here are a few home improvement tips to help you get your fireplace ready for the off-season.

How to Close Wood and Gas Fireplaces in the Spring

1. Schedule Chimney Service

Chimneys collect ash, soot, and creosote with repeated use. Without cleaning, these debris may diminish your indoor air quality and increase the likelihood of fires. Have a home improvement provider sweep and clean the firebox, flue, and grates to remove blockages.

2. Turn Off the Pilot

Gas fireplaces have pilot lights. When these remain lit, they continue to use gas and energy, which may result in elevated utility bills throughout the spring and summer. Turn off the light by switching the gas knob adjacent to or beneath your fireplace to the “off” position.

3. Close the Damper

Most fireplaces have dampers that open to allow air into the chimneys to feed flames. When this is left open during the summer, warm air may enter your home, causing your A/C to work harder to keep the space cool.

Close the damper in a wood-burning fireplace by reaching into the chimney and lifting the damper handle. With gas fireplaces, however, this hatch must remain open year-round to prevent gas buildup.
