Spring is quickly approaching, which means it’s time for homeowners to begin yard preparations. Your trees, shrubs, and grass will need special care after the dry and frigid winter. From mulching to tree trimming, lawn care will leave your yard lush, lively, and ready to take on the summer heat. Here’s what you need to do for your yard before spring arrives.

How to Get Your Yard Ready for Spring

1. Clear the Lawn

Before you treat your lawn, you’ll need to clear the area. Rake up fallen leaves, twigs, and other debris that can clog your mower and block your grass from properly absorbing nutrients and sunlight.

2. Lay Down Mulch

New mulch retains water for trees and plants and helps prevent weeds from growing. Spread it out in an even layer, at least three inches thick throughout the bed. This provides plant life with a solid protective shield.

3. Hire a Tree Trimmer

4. Start Mowing

Many homeowners make the mistake of mowing just once a week. To achieve a fuller, healthier lawn, mow as often as the grass needs. In most cases, grass blades should be 2 ½ to 3 inches tall before you mow. During the spring, this may mean you’ll need to mow more than once a week. Cut only one-third the length of the grass with each session.

5. Apply Fertilizer & Herbicide

As these plants are beginning to grow again, fertilizer can aid in development. Apply some to the grass and the drip line of trees. To prevent crabgrass from sprouting and taking up valuable nutrients, add a pre-emergent herbicide to the treatment.
