Countertops are central focal points of any kitchen, so if you’re remodeling a home for a client, you’ll want to encourage them to choose a material carefully. In addition to considering the aesthetics, it’s also important for them to keep the maintenance needs in mind. Here’s a guide to common countertop materials and what’s required to care for each.

3 Kitchen Countertop Materials & How to Maintain Them

 1. Quartz

This material is a popular option for counters because it’s durable, nonporous, and easy to maintain. To protect the investment, use a cleaner that’s specifically made for quartz; applying common household options could weaken the bonds between the stone aggregates, polymers, and resins that are used to manufacture the counter slabs. Additionally, utilize a nylon brush to get rid of stains, rather than steel wool pads. The latter can scratch or dull the surfaces.

2. Granite

countertopUnlike quartz, granite should be sealed annually. To do so, ensure the surface is dry and then buff the sealer using a rough cloth. This will protect against stains and enhance the material’s shine. Additionally, clean the counters weekly with water and soap. Avoid using cleaners with chemicals, as they can damage the seal, leaving the surface exposed. Finally, don’t leave wet containers on the counters, as sitting water can leave stains.

3. Marble

Like granite, marble is porous and needs to be sealed annually. There are two sealant options: polished and honed. The former will create a shiny look, while the latter—which is more popular—results in softer matte surfaces. To apply the sealant, use a soft cloth to rub it in. As long as you don’t use cleaners with harsh chemicals, such as ammonia or sodium hydroxide, the sealant should last about a year.

To clean marble countertops, utilize a sponge with mild soap and water on a daily basis. Finally, wipe up spills right away to prevent stains.
