When your home has wood windows, caring for these beautiful elements is a bit different than maintenance on PVC or metal frames. If you aren’t sure how to keep wood in top shape, there are a few tips to keep in mind that will work every time. Below are some do’s and don’ts to get started.

Do:

Use a microfiber cloth.

You want a soft brush or cloth for wood, such as a microfiber cloth or soft-bristled brush that won’t scratch the material. For corners, a soft-bristled toothbrush will do. Even stained and varnished windows should be cared for in this way.

Sand away tough stains.

Sometimes wood windows have tough stains or watermarks. Use fine sandpaper to gently remove the top layer and be sure to reapply varnish when cleaning is finished, and the frame is dry.

Try vinegar.

If you notice mold or mildew stains, a diluted vinegar solution can work. Mix four parts water with one part vinegar and leave on the moldy areas for a few minutes. Use your brush or cloth to wipe away the solution and the stain. If needed, clean with your gentle cleanser afterward.

Don’t:

Use abrasive cleaners.

Let dirt build up.

Keeping up with cleaning is vital to wood. Clean away dirt and dust with a dry brush or cloth regularly. The less time grime has to set in, the easier it will be to maintain.

Oversaturate.

Water can be problematic for wood if used in excess. Wood will rot, mold over, and weaken when oversaturated. When you do use water, be sure to limit the amount and make sure wood is dry before applying a water-based sealant to protect it from problems.
