A healthy, even smile plays a significant role in self-confidence. It’s not always easy to achieve, however, which is why your dentist may recommend orthodontic solutions. Invisalign® aligners and traditional metal braces are the two most popular options. Each has its advantages, so use the following guide to determine which is right for you.

Choosing Between Invisalign & Braces

Braces

Metal braces have been around since the 1700s and remain the standard for orthodontic care. They can resolve teeth crowding; cross-, over-, and underbites; jaw alignment issues; and more. The dentist will apply brackets to each tooth and then run a metal wire through them. Over time, they’ll adjust the tension so the teeth are drawn into proper alignment. The average treatment time is 24 months.

There are several options. Metal braces are the most common, but there are also less-noticeable ceramic options. Depending on your condition, the dentist may also offer lingual braces that are fixed to the back of the teeth. Children can get braces as early as 10 years old. They’re also appropriate for adults of any age that have a healthy mouth.

Invisalign

invisalignInvisalign is a popular braces alternative for patients that want something more discreet. It includes two clear trays that fit over the teeth like mouthguards. Patients wear them 20-22 hours a day and soak them for the remaining time. Gradually, the trays will move teeth into the correct position. The total treatment time is around one year.

While discreet, Invisalign can’t correct more serious alignment issues, such as over- and underbites. It’s often not recommended for young children since they require more care than traditional braces. Ask your child’s dentist about the level of care required and if Invisalign can resolve their orthodontic needs.
