On many bar and restaurant menus, mead now has a prominent place next to chardonnay, pinot grigio, and other popular elixirs. Made from a combination of honey, water, and yeast, it’s one of the first alcoholic beverages ever created. Here’s more information about why mead has made a modern-day comeback.

The Origins of Mead

Mead predates wine and beer, as its residue was found in Chinese pots that dated to 7000 B.C. It’s possible the first batch was created naturally. People may have sipped rainwater that was exposed to airborne yeast and had fermented in a beehive.

As grapevines weren’t adaptable to the growing conditions in northern countries during the Middle Ages, honey wine became a popular alternative in the regions. It was referenced as the beverage of choice in Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, and other great works from the period. When the New World was colonized in the 16th century, many people discovered cheaper alternative sweeteners, like sugarcane. As a result, honey’s demand declined.

Why Mead Is Popular Again

meadCraft beverages grew in popularity during the 21st century, opening the door for mead to make a comeback. Today, there are dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, and sweet mead options are available. In addition to the traditional ingredients, modern mead makers add fruits, spices, hops, and grains to create a completely new flavor profile.

With the ability to craft their own unique concoctions, more people are opening commercial meaderies. By 2003, there were 30 meaderies open in the U.S., and the number soared to over 400 by 2018.
