You rely on your headlights to help you to see the road and make your car seen by other drivers. However, when they fail you, it can lead to dangerous situations. Here are three signs that they need to be replaced, and why you should never put off the task.

How to Know When You Need New Headlights

1. Difficulty Seeing the Road

headlightsOver time, headlights can start to fail, just like any other car part. Older headlamp bulbs contain filaments that burn less bright as time goes on, which can interfere with your view of the road. Corroded ground wires can also cause dimness, so consider having your headlights inspected and replaced at the first sign of difficulty seeing the road ahead of you at night or in inclement weather.

2. Flickering Lights

Bad harnesses or an old car battery can cause flickering headlights, as can a worn filament. As soon as they start to flicker, your lights could fail soon after. When you spot flickering lights, check for loose connections at the battery terminals. If the flickering continues, replace the light as soon as possible.

3. Fuses That Blow Easily

Fuses are like tiny electrical breakers for your car and can burn out or blow if a certain electrical element, such as a headlight, starts receiving too much current. This problem can occur when headlights are installed that have incorrect wattages, or when electrical connections are loose or aren’t installed properly. Pay attention to how frequently your fuses burn out, and if the problem occurs often, take your car in to have the headlights inspected and replaced.
