In today’s world, when a cell phone breaks down, it not only means you can't make or receive phone calls, but it could also prevent you from browsing the internet, listening to music, or checking an important work email. One of the most common reasons people need iPhone® repair is that their device has gotten wet and shorted out. Whether they spilled coffee on it or dropped the phone in the sink or toilet, liquids and electronics do not mix. If your mobile device has gotten wet, here are some steps to take before seeking a professional’s help.

3 Steps to Take if Your Phone Gets Wet

1. Shut Off Power

The first step is to immediately turn off the device. Moisture can cause an electrical current to travel outside of safe pathways and fry sensitive electronics. This is less problematic if the phone is not on, so as soon as you pull the phone out of the liquid, press and hold the power button.

2. Disassemble the Device

The next step is to get as much moisture out of the phone as possible. Remove any accessories, such as headphones or a protective case. Modern smartphones aren’t as able to be disassembled as they were in the past—including iPhones—but dry out everything you can with a clean, dry cloth.

3. Place Device in Rice

iPhone repairInstant rice is extremely absorbent. During cooking, it can soak up one or two times its own volume of water in just a matter of minutes. Thus, it can also sop up the moisture from inside your phone, although it takes longer at room temperature.

Cover your phone with uncooked instant rice and leave it covered for two to three days. For best results, change its position within the rice every few hours. After about 72 hours, try turning your phone back on.
