Winter will be over before you know it, which means it's time to start thinking about how to get your lawn and garden in shape for the growing season. The following guide outlines a few landscaping tips and tricks to  use so you can enjoy the beautiful outdoors in spring.

How to Get Your Landscaping Ready for the Spring Season

1. Get Rid of Debris

First, remove any debris that’s accumulated over the winter months. Downed limbs, fallen twigs, and dead leaves make your yard look messy and unkempt. Rake them up, and add them to your compost pile or bag them for curbside collection.

2. Aerate the Grass

Aeration is the process of creating small air pockets in the ground. It loosens the soil, allowing water, air, and nutrients to penetrate the soil and reach roots. Grass in an aerated lawn grows strong and fast.

3. Fertilize the Lawn

landscapingFertilizer encourages healthy grass and plant growth. Apply it to your lawn in early spring to feed the grass along with a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent crabgrass from growing. Four to six weeks later, apply another layer of fertilizer and herbicide, and include a weed killer to keep your landscaping healthy.

4. Add Mulch

Surround the roots of shrubs and trees with a layer of mulch—two to four inches—to aid moisture retention and prevent weeds. Mulch will also keep grass from growing in the wrong places.
