In addition to picking up your hunting supplies for turkey season, ensure you have the proper permits and licenses. Even if you have been hunting in past seasons, recent changes may affect your ability to hunt this year. The following guide points out a few factors to consider so you can be fully prepared.

Requirements & How to Get Started

To be allowed to hunt for wild turkey anywhere in Wisconsin, each person must have a Bonus Harvest Authorization, formerly known as the Turkey Harvest Authorization. You also must have a turkey license and a wild turkey stamp. The necessary licenses are available on the state’s Go Wild website and can be purchased together as a part of the Conservation Patron License and Senior Citizen Recreation Card packages.

Currently, Bonus Harvest Authorizations are available for purchase over-the-counter on a first-come, first-serve basis. The state is divided into zones, and each zone has its own sale date. After the sale dates have passed, leftover authorizations will be available for sale but will be restricted to one purchase per person on a day-to-day basis. Authorizations can be bought in this manner until they sell out or until the end of the hunting season.

How to Prepare for a Safe & Successful Hunt

Get Supplies

Hunting SuppliesWhen you go shopping for hunting supplies, stock up on the essentials. Bringing along enough drinking water is as critical in colder weather as it is in hotter temperatures because you can still get dehydrated. You should also pack a basic first-aid kit to handle emergencies in the wilderness; it may take time to get to a hospital or clinic.

Be Sure of Your Mark

Ensure you really are shooting at a turkey. You should also ensure the path in your line of sight is clear and that the target is the only object in that path.

Don’t Track By Sounds

While certain noises may sound like the movements of a turkey, you may actually be tracking another hunter. Tracking strictly by sight will help you avoid startling another hunter and prevent accidents.

Never Wear Red, White, Black, or Blue

These colors should always be avoided since they’re common colors for mature turkeys. When you wear these colors, another hunter may mistake you for prey.
