With warm temperatures already in place, now is the best time to ensure your AC unit is working efficiently. Otherwise, you may be stuck in a hot house as you wait for a technician. You can easily avoid costly AC repairs by following a few simple steps below.

How to Prepare Your Air Conditioner for Summer

1. Open Up the Vents

Locate all the registers in the house, the grates where cold air comes into each room from the ducts. Switch the vents to open and wipe off any dust and dirt. If the vents are located on the floor, make sure furniture and decor aren’t blocking the airflow. If an intake vent is blocked, the system will not evenly distribute air, and you’ll experience uneven cooling throughout the house.

2. Clean the Unit

If you covered your outdoor unit over the winter, take off the cover, clean it, and store it. Sweep away leaves and other debris, hose down the unit, and check for any pest infestations. Trim back nearby bushes to give the unit a foot of clearance on all sides.

ac repairNext, dust off the indoor coil, which is located on or near the furnace. The air filter is most likely dirty, so replace it if it’s a disposable one. If you have a washable filter, rinse it off with warm water and let it dry completely before putting it back into the AC system. With a clean filter, air will flow easily through the system, so the fans won’t have to work as hard and waste energy.

3. Schedule an Inspection

Before turning on the system, make an appointment with an AC repair technician. They'll test the thermostat to make sure the system is responding to temperature changes and producing cold air. They'll also inspect the fans, wiring, and condensation lines for damage and repair or replace components as necessary.
