After a long day at work, you and your coworkers may decide to head over to a bar for a few happy hour drinks. Socializing outside of the office lets you bond with peers, but it’s wise to keep a few boundaries and limitations in mind.

Do:

Know your tolerance.

Getting drunk at happy hour in front of your peers doesn’t look good. Know your drink limit and stay within it. Avoid rounds of shots as well. The point is to unwind and relax, not get out of control.

Make sure you eat.

Happy hour is generally around dinnertime, so order something to eat while you’re at the bar with coworkers. Consider splitting a few appetizers between you, so everyone has some sustenance to soak up the alcohol.

Don’t:

Talk about coworkers & managers.

happy hourAvoid discussing other members of your team who aren’t there. If you’re a manager, don’t give away details about your direct reports, especially confidential information. Refrain from badmouthing or gossiping about anyone, whether they work for you or you for them.

Only talk about work.

While events from the day may come up in conversation, find other subjects to discuss. Not only does this give you and your party a break from the grind, but it also helps you learn more about each other as people.
