Eulogies are traditionally given at funeral services, with the speech including personal achievements and other notable details about a person who passed away. This gives mourners in attendance a glimpse into a rich life once lived. Below, learn how to determine who should write a eulogy for your deceased loved one and what it should include.

Who Should Deliver the Eulogy?

The spouse, parent, sibling, adult child, or whichever other person was closest to the deceased will most likely know who they’d want to speak at the funeral service. As they could be too distraught to perform the task themselves, the relative might pass on the honor to someone else in the family, a close friend, or a colleague. The type of relationship the deceased had with the person should factor into the decision. If several people want to give the eulogy, they can each give a short speech focusing on a memorable experience with the deceased.

How Can You Prepare the Eulogy?

funeral servicesWhen writing a eulogy for the funeral service, base the information on a theme, such as a brief biography or a specific time in the person’s life. This should be established at the beginning of the speech. In the middle section, share stories about how the deceased impacted the community, their family life, career accomplishments, or any other anecdotes that relate to the central theme. End the eulogy by going over the theme again and how much the person will be missed. Once you have a final draft, read the speech out loud. Change words that are hard to pronounce and decide where to place pauses. It can be difficult to keep your emotions in check when reading out a eulogy, so remember to breathe and pause as you need.
