During Spring, it’s essential to begin organizing a lawn care plan. Your irrigation system plays a central role, including how you use it. You don’t want to over- or underwater your lawn. Use the following tips to ensure you achieve lush, healthy grass that will last throughout the year.

How to Properly Water Your Lawn

1. Wait Until the Soil Dries

You’ll want to wait until the soil thaws before watering your lawn. As the ice melts, it will spread moisture. Watering on top of that will oversaturate the soil and drown your grass. Walk around your yard. If the ground underfoot has no spring and is rough in your hands, it’s likely still frozen. You can push your finger into the soil as it dries to determine when the thaw is complete.

2. Water Deep & Long, Not Often

Water needs time to seep down into the ground to avoid evaporation. If you water briefly every day, most of the liquid won’t make it to your plants’ roots. Instead, water deeply several days a week. Generally, an inch will settle in your lawn if you water for 30 minutes three times each week.

3. Water in the Morning

The soil has warmed up, and the sun has yet to fully rise overhead. This gives moisture plenty of time to settle in the ground. Avoid watering in the early evening to middle of the night. As temperatures drop, the water may still freeze in early spring.

4. Have Your Irrigation System Inspected

A leaky sprinkler head will waste a lot of water. It will also oversaturate the surrounding soil, which can kill the grass. If you have movable sprinkler heads, broken fixtures may not fire water into the right areas. Have a professional inspect and handle sprinkler repairs.

Alternatively, if you’re using sprinklers that connect to hoses, consider upgrading. An accurate lawn irrigation system will better use and disperse water. It can also connect to a timing system to follow an optimal watering schedule.
