How to Enjoy Your Child’s First Trip to the Beach

1. Practice Sun Protection

UV rays can cause sunburns that damage delicate skin. Keep your little one safe by having them wear a hat and sunglasses. Pack a beach umbrella and stay in the shade when the sun is strongest, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Use a high-SPF sunscreen formulated especially for children. 

2. Pack Beach-Friendly Toys

Leave the tablets and other electronic devices in the car. Opt for beach-friendly toys instead. A shovel and molds to build sandcastles can keep little ones amused for hours. Plastic pails are also useful for collecting pretty seashells. 

3. Bring Snacks

Kids are going to be physically active at the beach, playing in the sand and swimming with you in the sea. This will leave them hungrier and thirstier than usual. Bring lots of water and sand-proof snacks. 

For example, fruit is ideal because it’s healthy, hydrating, and can easily be rinsed off if it gets sandy. 

4. Time Your Trip

Kids probably won't have a chance for a nap on a beach day. You don't want them totally tuckered out, so limit your excursion to a few hours. Low tide is the ideal time to visit the shore, as the smaller waves are less frightening for little ones. 

5. Don’t Forget Plastic Bags

Bring oversized plastic bags to help contain the mess at the end of your child’s first beach day. Sandy toys and shoes can be thrown in one. Another one can hold wet swimwear. Make sure to bring a change of dry clothes so your baby will comfortable on the ride home.
