When you want to straighten your smile, your dentist will offer you several options. Many adults choose Invisalign®, which corrects misalignment in a discreet way. If you’re considering this treatment, here are answers to a few of the questions you might have about it.

What You Should Know About Invisalign

How does it work?

When you use Invisalign, your teeth are repositioned using a series of clear, plastic aligners. Your dentist will develop a specific plan for your teeth, with each aligner designed to move your teeth in stages. Typically, you’re supposed to use an aligner for at least 20 hours per day for several weeks before switching to the next one.

How long does the treatment take?

dentistEvery patient is different, but most people wear Invisalign for one to two years. This period is similar to that of traditional braces. Wearing the aligners every day as directed is important, as skipping days can cause teeth to shift back and lengthen the duration of treatment.

Most people also need to wear retainers at the end of their treatments to maintain their new smiles.

Does it hurt?

You might feel some discomfort or pressure on the teeth when you first switch to a new aligner. It may also feel like the device doesn’t fit correctly.

This is normal, as the aligner will place varying amounts of force on the teeth to shift them into place. After the first few days, you shouldn't experience any pain.

Can I eat and drink with the aligners?

One of the appealing aspects of Invisalign is that it’s removable, and you should take it out before meals. Dentists recommend only drinking water with an aligner in place.

This means you can still eat your favorite foods during treatment, including popcorn and sticky candy. It also decreases the chances of getting cavities due to trapped food particles.
