Laser hair removal is a safe and effective way to get rid of body hair permanently. If you’re considering it, you may be wondering what happens during and after treatment. Check out the guide below for what to expect.

The Process

laser-hair-removalLaser hair removal treatment is relatively painless, though you may feel minor discomfort. The laser damages the follicles in the treated area, so the hair won’t grow back or grows back less quickly.

Multiple sessions are required, as only hairs in the growth stage are destroyed. Each treatment will affect a new “crop” until 90% of hair follicles in a certain area are permanently altered.

Hair Regrowth

Between treatments, you’ll have reduced hair growth and need to shave less frequently. Expect to see small black hair particles that resemble stubble or blackheads; these are pieces of the destroyed, growing hairs that will be shed.

Often in as few as three treatments, you will no longer need to wax or shave. But results vary widely, and others may need 10 or more sessions.

It may be necessary to have touch-ups every few months as well to maintain a completely hairless surface, as the treatment can’t remove 100% of hair.

Aftereffects

Most people will have some redness or itchiness in the first 24 hours after a treatment, similar to razor burn. Your technician will provide you with after care tips to help soothe skin, such as using cold packs. Talk to your doctor or technician about blistering or redness that persists longer than 24 to 48 hours.

Laser hair removal treatment can also affect the production of melanin, the substance that creates skin pigment. This can lead to either a temporary darkening or lightening in targeted areas.

After Care

While the skin is recovering, avoid using lotions or any cosmetic products for the first 24 to 48 hours. Stay out of the sun for the first few days, and always use sunscreen after that. Avoid hot showers or hot tubs that may further irritate skin.

Gently exfoliate with a soft brush or cloth after irritation has passed to help remove dead hair particles.
