With winter winding down, spring is around the corner. It’s a time of renewal and regeneration, so planting new flowers is a perfect start to the cycle. However, you may wonder what flowers are best for early spring. Whether you’re starting in a greenhouse, the kitchen window, or outside in your flowerbed, below are a few options to brighten your day and get you into the spirit of the spring.

What Flowers Should You Plant in Early Spring?

1. Marsh Marigold

The marsh marigold, also known as a buttercup flower, bursts into bright yellow bloom in April and May, with moist and well-shaded conditions. Marigolds are annuals, so they only live through one season, but they are resilient and low maintenance.

2. Wood Poppy

If you love the bright yellow appearance of the marsh marigold but want something that will grow back year after year, try the perennial wood poppy. They also achieve the best growth in partial to complete shade, though direct sunlight is safe if the soil of your flowerbed stays moist. There are also orange variants of this beautiful plant.

3. Columbine

flowersColumbine is a perennial wildflower with over 60 different species. They grow best in the shade and remain a hardy plant, as long as they are not in direct sunlight. Aside from their delicate shape and soft pink to purple gradient colors, they are known to draw hummingbirds and are believed to protect against evil.

4. Wild Geranium

If you enjoy pinks and purples, the wild geranium is a perfect choice. This perennial spreads in clumps as the flowers populate and can grow up to two-and-a-half feet tall. Due to the proliferation of its seed pods, it spreads quickly.

5. Wild Lupine

Another excellent wildflower is the wild lupine. These perennials have dozens of pea-sized heads that jut out along the stem. The colors can range drastically, from two-toned blue and white to reds and yellows. They are hardy plants that can survive dry conditions and even grow in sand, gravel, or clay.
