Cremation is one of the options when someone you love passes or if you are preplanning your funeral. Before setting the details of the process with a funeral director, it’s important to understand the basics of planning one. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Plan a Cremation Service

1. Speak With Family

If funeral services weren’t preplanned by the deceased, speak with close family to decide if cremation is the best choice. Legally, only spouses are needed to sign off on the choice, but if children are the next of kin, each must give permission.

2. Decide on the Service Type

cremationYou can still have a service when you choose cremation. Anything from a traditional one to a small memorial or celebration of life can take place before or after the cremation. If you choose to do so before, you can also have a viewing. You’ll need to decide on readings, music, prayers, and other personalized components.

3. Research Religious Limits

Some religions and cultures have limitations and rules about cremation. While Judaism, for example, forbids it, the Catholic Church has recognized it as permissible. Make sure you respect the culture or beliefs of the deceased, and speak with a religious leader, such as a Rabbi or Priest, if you need assistance.

4. Finalize Remains

Decide if you will be keeping the remains in an urn or if they will be distributed in smaller urns to multiple family members. You can also purchase a spot in a columbarium or bury them. Another option is to scatter the ashes somewhere special, such as a garden or in a lake; however, make sure to get special permission if you’re doing so on public property.

5. Invite Guests

If you choose to do a smaller service or a scattering ceremony, create a guest list, and send out formal invitations with specific details, including the day, time, and any attire requirements. The most efficient way to do so is online.
