Tile flooring provides an elegant look for nearly any room. However, if you want to keep your floors looking like new, you need to clean them regularly. Each material has different requirements. Professional tile and grout cleaning can help, but you need to know how to maintain your flooring in between appointments as well.

4 Types of Tile Material & How to Clean Them

1. Ceramic

Ceramic tiles are dense and durable and can handle many cleaning methods and solutions. However, warm water with mild detergent is usually most effective. About once a week, go over tiles with a microfiber cloth dipped in the soap and water solution to remove dust and germs.

2. Porcelain

Porcelain is even denser than ceramic, which makes it a popular choice for bathrooms and shower stalls. Soapy water and cloth can often work for porcelain as well, but you may need to use a stiff-bristled brush and hot water for challenging spots that include stains or soap scum.

3. Natural Stone

To remove dirt, use a soft broom or vacuum made for tile flooring. For cleaning, use a solution that’s pH neutral. There are options made specifically for natural stone.

4. Grout

Most tile includes visible grout in between each section, which also needs regular cleaning if you want to maintain a fresh look. Start by applying hot water to the grout lines with a steam cleaner or showerhead, and scrubbing with a toothbrush or grout brush as you go. You can also make a paste using baking soda and water, or purchase grout cleaner.
