Hydraulic systems depend on hoses to transfer fluid efficiently. Operators tend to focus most on the logistics of the application, but one step that’s sometimes overlooked is cleaning the hydraulic hose assembly. This part is likely to accumulate debris, such as dirt, dust, grime, metal chips, and other contaminants that could clog filters, damage vital parts, and even lead to premature equipment failure. Avoid these problems by following these basic cleaning tips.

A Guide to Hydraulic Hose Cleaning

1. Use Foam Projectiles

Shooting foam projectiles into the hose with clean gas or compressed air is an effective cleaning method. Select projectiles larger than the hose diameter so they can push against the walls and pull all of the debris out.

Inject the material through both sides of the hose to ensure a more thorough clean. Always cap the assembly when you’re done cleaning to prevent recontamination.

If you’re cleaning a shorter or smaller hose, try pressurized air instead. The air must be dry and clean to prevent issues like moisture buildup or particulate accumulation.

Keep in mind that using pressurized air in a longer assembly could be detrimental, as small contaminants inside could end up catching on the hose.

3. Flush With Fluid

If you prefer to clean the hose with fluid, opt for a liquid substance that’s fully compatible with the assembly’s inner tube. Don’t use water; hydraulic systems can sustain permanent damage if moisture intrusion occurs.

The fluid travels turbulently through the hose, flushing away pollutants on the walls. Always filter the fluid before you flush the hydraulic hose assembly, and wait until the tube walls are dry before proceeding with your project.
