From pollen to pet dander, homes often harbor just as many allergens as the outdoors. For allergy sufferers, the accumulation of these irritants results in a year-round struggle with stuffy noses and swollen, itchy eyes. Fortunately, HVAC contractors can work with homeowners to reduce the presence of irritants through the use of a functioning HVAC system.

How to Alleviate Allergies Using Your HVAC System

1. Utilize a High-Quality Filter

HVAC air filters are designed to trap particles before the heated or cooled air is distributed throughout the home. Yet, not all options work as effectively as others. Opt for a filter with the highest MERV rating that your system can handle to eliminate the largest amount of allergens as possible. If an older system limits your rating, consider either upgrading to a new HVAC system or installing UV lamps within the duct systems to kill allergens before they enter your home.

Along with selecting the right filter, you must change the air conditioner and furnace filter regularly to maintain the air quality. For allergy sufferers, monthly replacements are ideal. However, if you have pets, the frequency may need to be increased to every two weeks or weekly because they often carry pollen and other irritants into the home on their fur.

2. Control Humidity Levels

If the air is too dry, on the other hand, it can irritate sinus passages. In both cases, the results can worsen allergy symptoms. As such, it's essential to monitor and maintain a humidity level between 35% and 50%. If that's a struggle, work with an HVAC contractor to install a whole-home humidifier or dehumidifier, depending on your needs.

3. Clean the Duct Work

For central heating and cooling systems, the air is distributed throughout the home via ductwork. Unfortunately, the pathways are prime locations for a buildup of particles that bypass the filter. Dust, mold, and pollen can also accumulate in these areas throughout the vents when the blower isn't activated. To prevent the particles from being circulated through your home, have the ducts cleaned during your annual furnace or AC maintenance appointment.
