As the spring weather starts to saunter in, it’s time to think about preparing your yard for sunny days and warm evenings. Your backyard pond is the perfect place to relax as the temperature rises. Consult the helpful tips below to ensure your pond is ready for the season.

How to Open Your Backyard Pond for Spring

1. Remove Debris

Even if you covered your pond through the harsh winter months, there’s still likely to be sludge buildup in the water. Manually remove as much debris as possible with a skimmer net or pond vacuum. You can also use a long-handled brush to get rid of string algae.

2. Change Pond Water

Many people opt to change 50%-75% of their pond water in the early spring. Not only does fresh water prevent the buildup of harmful bacteria or algae growth, but it also jump-starts the cleanliness of your pond after a long winter of having little to no filtration.

3. Add Plants or Fish

backyard pondStocking your pond with plants and fish is a simple way to add life and beauty to your backyard. From creeping Jenny to water lettuce, there are an array of pond plants to choose from. If you opt to add fish, keep in mind that spring is when they are most vulnerable to health problems. Add pond salt to replace electrolytes and sodium that fish can lose when they’re feeling the stress of adapting to a new environment.

4. Reconnect the Pump & Filter

Rinse your skimmer pads before restarting the pump to ensure the filtration process is effective from the onset. Do not use soap or bleach on the pads, and if they appear to be worn or torn up, replace them before starting the system.

5. Add Helpful Bacteria

All ponds require beneficial bacteria to break down sludge and maintain the general health of the water. Once the pond reaches a temperature of 50 degrees, you can add pond cleaners and purifying agents that will keep the water clean and clear.
