Dogs love to explore new objects and chew on items. This is especially true for teething puppies. When they swallow the wrong items, it can lead to a bowel obstruction. This health issue occurs when an object fully or partially blocks their stomach and intestines. It can cause waste to build up, damage their bowels, and more, which is why symptoms warrant a trip to the vet hospital.

The Symptoms of Bowel Obstructions

1. Vomiting

A bowel obstruction causes liquid to build up inside your dog. After they eat or drink, they may vomit because of it. This usually occurs repeatedly. Vomiting can lead to weight loss and malnutrition. Schedule a trip to the vet hospital.

If they suspect a bowel obstruction, they’ll perform a radiograph or ultrasound to confirm. They may then insert a small tube down your dog’s throat. A camera and clasping device are attached to retrieve the foreign object.

2. Dehydration

If you suspect dehydration, grab the skin near their shoulder blade, raise it, and let go. If it springs back slowly and seems elastic, they’re likely dehydrated. When you visit a vet hospital, the veterinarian will provide IV fluids to rehydrate your dog. If a large bone or foreign object has caused a significant bowel obstruction, they may recommend surgery to remove it.

3. Bloating

Fluid buildup can also lead to bloating. If you notice your dog is bloated, schedule an exam. Bloating can be the cause of several other health issues.

Once the bowel obstruction is resolved, pay extra attention to what your dog eats. Make sure toys, rocks, and small animal bones are never left out. These are common causes of obstructions, and if they’re sharp, can also cut your dog’s stomach and intestines.
