Vaccinations protect your dog’s health. Many are recommended soon after they’re born, and some will need to be renewed every few years going forward as well. If you’re a new pet owner, use the following pet vaccine guide to ensure your dog’s health needs are met.

What Core Vaccines Does Your Dog Need?

A core pet vaccine is necessary, and in some cases, legally required. These vaccines include the canine parvovirus, distemper virus, parainfluenza, and adenovirus-2 vaccines (DHPP), rabies virus, and leptospirosis.

All of these diseases can have severe health consequences for dogs and may even be fatal. A pet vaccine exposes them to a small amount of the virus so that their immune system can build a defense against it. This way, they’ll then be safe from other dogs that carry these diseases.

The recommended pet vaccine schedule is:

  • DHPP and Leptospira at 6-8 weeks
  • DHPP, Leptospira, and rabies at 10-12 weeks
  • DHPP at 14-16 weeks
  • Leptospira and rabies every year
  • DHPP booster every 3 years

Some rabies vaccinations are only needed every 3 years, so speak with your veterinarian about which options are available for your dog.

What Other Pet Vaccines Should You Consider?

pet vaccinesNon-core vaccines are not legally required, but they’re highly recommended. They include vaccinations against the canine influenza virus, Bordetella, and Lyme disease. Depending on where you live, your veterinarian may offer regional vaccines for rattlesnake venom.

Vaccinations are a fast, easy procedure that your veterinarian can perform in minutes. By getting them vaccinations, you can confidently take your dog outdoors to play with other pets knowing that they’re safe from diseases.
