Furniture is a big investment, and when it comes to your bedroom, you want to create a cozy, inviting atmosphere. Therefore, you should always consider the right pieces for your needs. Before you enter a furniture store, learn more about the process of picking out bedroom furniture.

Do:

Measure carefully.

First, take measurements of your home to make sure a new piece will fit. Measure the space where something will eventually go, and make sure it can also fit through all of the doorways and hallways, too. This is especially true if you have an apartment with an elevator or lots of doorways. You don’t want to put yourself in a situation where you’re returning your new bedroom furniture because it won’t fit.

Consider how a piece will look with other furniture.

If it’s fabric, ask for a swatch that you can take home. Observe how it looks during different parts of the day and under different types of lighting. Make sure it doesn’t clash with other pieces, too.

Don’t:

Make a quick purchase.

It can be tempting to immediately pick a piece of furniture and decide that it’s the one. However, buying furniture isn’t something that should be rushed into. It’s a big investment for your home, and it’s something you’ll have to see every day. Walk away for at least a day before going back to the furniture store to make any purchases. Also, if it’s something you sit on like a sofa, sit in it for at least 15 minutes to ensure it’s comfortable.

Forget about children and pets.

If you have children or pets, you’ll need to keep that in mind when picking out bedroom furniture. If you’re planning to have children soon, remember that your furniture is made to last a very long time, and you should consider that.

Light colors will pick up the hair of dark-haired animals, and vice versa. Consider that maybe white isn’t the right color, in case there are stains. Also, some materials like silk and velvet aren’t the best idea, as they need to be professionally cleaned after every accident.
