Kids are often curious—which is why it is not unusual for parents to come across kids dunking their toys in the toilet. However, while this can make for a funny story, their actions may cause a clog that requires drain cleaning or more serious repair. The guide below offers tips for keeping your plumbing safe from toddlers and vice versa.

Plumbing Precautions to Take If You Have Children

1. Use a Toilet Lid Lock

If your child is still using a toddler potty, go ahead and install a lid lock on your toilet seats. They may be tempted to flush non-flushable items down the toilet, which will end up requiring drain cleaning. They could also fall in and make a mess.

2. Test the Water Temperature

Check the setting on your water heater. What may seem like a hot, relaxing temperature to you could burn your child. Setting it at 120 degrees Fahrenheit is recommended by plumbers.

3. Teach Your Child What Goes Where

It’s never too early to begin teaching your child what can and can’t go down the drain. In the bathroom, make sure they know to never flush wipes, paper towels, or cloth items. In the kitchen, explain that grease, fat, pasta, coffee grounds, and other items that will require drain cleaning services should always go in the trash.

4. Upgrade Your Washer’s Drain Hose

The larger your family is, the more laundry you have to do. This will increase the amount of lint in your system. Too much will clog your unit’s drain hose, so install a new cover. This wire mesh feature will capture lint while allowing water to flush, preventing clogs. If you need a hand with installation, call a plumber.
