If you want to get the most out of selling your home, you’ll need to hire the right real estate agent. Make sure to interview and hire an agent who has your best interest in mind. Here are a few questions to ask.

What to Ask Before Hiring a Real Estate Agent

1. How Long Have You Been Working in This Market?

If the agent you’re interviewing has been around long enough, they’ll have seen highs and lows in the market. As such, they’ll be able to speak to the value of your home, how quickly it will sell, and which tactics are best at the time. They should also know the market specific to the neighborhood and surrounding areas.

2. What Are Other Homes Worth in the Area?

If your agent knows your area, he should provide you with a comparative market analysis (CMA). This analysis will list homes that are currently for sale and have recently sold in the area to compare to yours.

This will help you determine how much to sell your home for and how it compares with others in your neighborhood. With a CMA in hand, you will feel more confident in knowing how the agent’s view aligns with the CMA’s analysis of your home.

3. How Will You Market My Home?

The style of home will likely dictate the types of interested buyers. For example, a one-bedroom apartment and condo may appeal most to singles or couples who have not yet started a family, while a single-family home can attract a growing family looking for a little more wiggle room.

Your agent should market it in the best way possible for that age group, using media that fits with the demographic. They can run ads in magazines that are geared towards new parents, or post a listing on a popular blog for young single professionals, to name a few examples.
