While blurry vision has several causes, astigmatism is one of the most common. It occurs when the cornea, or the clear front section of the eye, isn’t completely round. Signs & Symptoms

In addition to blurry vision, those who have an astigmatism may experience distortions that affect their ability to see clearly. Vision issues can lead to more symptoms such as eye strain, headaches, squinting, and trouble seeing during evening hours or in dim lighting.

Known as a refractive error because of how the eyes process light, astigmatism can happen in conjunction with other issues such as nearsightedness and farsightedness.

Treatment

Most astigmatism issues are corrected with cylindrical and toric lenses in the form of glasses or soft contact lenses that allow the light to bend evenly when entering the eye.

Severe cases can be corrected with special hard gas-permeable contact lenses.

Permanent reshaping procedures are also available, such as LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) refractive surgeries. LASIK removes corneal tissue from the inner layers only, while PRK removes superficial and inner corneal tissue.

Prevention

Currently, there is no way to prevent astigmatism. At your annual eye exam we will be able to detect astigmatism and offer the best options for correction.
