Cats must maintain healthy teeth and gums to avoid issues such as cavities and infections. In addition to routine visits to the veterinarian, you’ll need to practice good dental hygiene habits for your cat at home. Here is a guide to help you.

Why It’s Important to Brush Their Teeth

Without proper oral hygiene, your feline friend might develop tooth decay, toothaches, and gum disease. If your pet has dental problems, including sore teeth or gums or missing teeth, they may refuse to eat, which could result in nutritional deficiencies, or be unable to play with toys, which could decrease their quality of life.

Dental care helps maintain organ health as well by preventing gum bacteria from entering the bloodstream, where it may harm the liver and kidneys. Bacteria can also contribute to a heart infection called endocarditis.

How to Brush

veterinarianTo brush your cat’s teeth, you’ll need supplies, including a soft-bristled brush or soft gauze if you plan to use your finger. Look for a veterinarian-approved cat toothpaste; never use human toothpaste, as it’s toxic to felines.

Find a comfortable place, like your cat’s favorite chair or your lap, and try to relax them before proceeding to reduce potential anxiety. Let them smell the brush and paste, then let them taste the paste. This will help them realize it’s not a threat; they may even enjoy the taste.

Lift their lip and apply the brush, or your finger, with gentle circular motions. Clean the outside surface of the teeth and gums thoroughly; pay particular attention to the back teeth, which can build up tartar more quickly than the front teeth.

As you brush, check their teeth for discoloration, chips, or other unusual symptoms. When you’re finished, offer them a treat so they will learn to look forward to brushing.
