For some people, visiting the dentist, even for routine procedures, can induce anxiety. Dental anxiety is relatively common, but overcoming it is essential to maintain good oral health and a bright smile. Fortunately, there are techniques to calm your nerves before your next appointment.

How to Ease Anxiety at the Dentist

1. Talk to the Dentist

Let the dental hygienist and dentist know you’re nervous. Together, you can come up with a strategy. For example, the dental team may explain what they’re doing at each stage of your visit. They may also advise using a hand signal to alert them if you need to take a break. Some offices offer sedation dentistry using nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” which can help you feel more at ease.

2. Find a Distraction

3. Practice Deep Breathing

Deep-breathing exercises can lower blood pressure and calm your nerves. One mistake people with dental anxiety commonly make is holding their breath during the procedure. Instead, try to breathe slowly and deeply for five to eight seconds on each inhale and exhale.

4. Bring a Friend

Having moral support can also help ease anxiety. Have a friend or family member drive you to the appointment and wait for you in the waiting room, or ask your dentist ahead of time if they can accompany you to hold your hand or provide a distraction.
