A flower arrangement makes a thoughtful gift and reminds the recipient of your affection. However, cut flowers have a limited life span, and even if the recipient takes good care of them, they eventually wither. Fortunately, some species last longer than others do. If you’re looking to gift those that last as long as possible, consider some of the following types.

3 Cut Flowers That Look Lovely for Longer

1. Zinnias

The zinnia is recognized as the longest-lasting cut flower. It offers an explosion of color and can keep its petals for three to four weeks if cared for properly. Trim the stem before placing it in a vase, store it in filtered water, and change the water every two days.

Zinnias are available from late spring to early fall and are best at the height of summer.

2. Chrysanthemums

Flowers in Honolulu, HIChrysanthemums, sometimes shortened to "mums," are native to Asia and Eastern Europe. The name comes from the Greek words for "golden flower." They can also keep for three to four weeks if you give them clean water every two days and trim any leaves below the waterline.

They’re available from July to November but are freshest in late summer or early fall.

3. Orchids

Orchids are elegant, colorful, and fragrant. They require considerable care to grow, but they last up to three weeks if cut, placed in warm filtered water, and cared for properly. Top off the water daily and replace it with fresh water every two days. Avoid tap or softened water, since fluoride, sodium, and high mineral content can shorten the flower’s life.

Orchids are available from early spring to late fall.
