If you're building or restoring a wooden deck, the paint or finish you choose is important for more than aesthetics. A PMMA waterproofing system protects the deck from both water and UV radiation. Without this protection, your deck will deteriorate quickly, will need more frequent repairs, and will have a shorter life span.

What Does UV Do to Wood?

1. Changes the Color

PMMA Waterproofing SystemsWood bleaches when exposed to too much sun. If your deck is partially shaded or has furniture on it, you may notice dark patches against the pale, weathered wood surface. Even if you stain your deck with a PMMA waterproofing system at this point, the color difference may stay noticeable. The only way to correct it is to remove the bleached surface of the wood.

2. Breaks Down Fibers

Without a PMMA waterproofing system, wood breaks down since it’s exposed to UV rays. They enter the wood and break the bonds between tiny particles, weakening the fibers. Over time, the surface of the wood will start to peel away, exposing more of the interior and further weakening the material.

3. Causes Warping, Cracking, & Cupping

The deterioration caused by UV rays isn't even and predictable. Some areas of the wood are denser than others, so they'll break down at different rates, warping the boards. As they get weaker, they're more likely to crack, either from pressure or from drying out. The surface material will break off and the boards will shift, creating cupped shapes that can trap water and accelerate the damage.
