Concrete is a durable material, which is why it’s commonly used for foundations, driveways, and sidewalk construction. As moisture and chemicals settle on concrete and heavy vehicles drive over surfaces, regular upkeep is required to prolong the life of your investment. By picking up a few building supplies to perform the following maintenance tasks in spring, you can reverse the effects of winter and help concrete last for up to 30 years.

3 Spring Maintenance Tips for Concrete

1. Pressure Wash Surfaces

It’s not uncommon for concrete to be covered in dirt and gritty particles from melting snow and de-icing salt. Beyond making surfaces look dingy, ammonium nitrates and ammonium sulfates are chemicals in de-icing products that can cause corrosion. Use a pressure washer to eliminate winter residue.

2. Caulk Cracks

Water can get into the fissures and cause the cracks to expand in fluctuating temperatures. To prevent this, go to a building supply store and pick up polyurethane caulk. Sealing the cracks with the substance will prevent water infiltration and stop crevices from spreading.

3. Seal Surfaces

If it’s been a while since the concrete driveway was sealed, invest in the service. Sealing should be performed every four or five years. Adding a protective surface layer will repel moisture, prevent chemical absorption, and block UV rays to avoid rapid deterioration.
