Today’s technological world presents many advantages, including access to unique learning opportunities for kids. Children on the autism spectrum can select from an array of apps that they can access on a smartphone or tablet. Here are some options to help your son or daughter learn and grow.

A Guide to Apps for Autism

1. Educational Apps

Many apps focus on strengthening your child’s reading skills, and there are apps for many reading levels. Younger children may enjoy the Super Why app, developed by PBS®, which encourages kids to identify and trace letters and build reading comprehension skills. Starfall ABCs is another useful app for early readers. It encourages letter recognition and allows children to practice incorporating letters and sounds into sentences.

2. Scheduling & Organizing Apps

DayCape is designed to create an easy-to-understand structure for a child’s day. Parents can create a daily schedule accompanied by visual images for comprehension. Children can follow along with the schedule, track their time, and receive notifications as the day progresses.

The ChoiceWorks app also allows children to manage schedules. In addition to time tracking, this app teaches kids how to wait patiently and express their feelings.

3. Development Apps

Other apps can help children with autism improve communication and socialization skills. For example, using Proloquo2Go, they can tap images and type words to communicate with family and friends. QuestionIt is another app that develops a child’s language skills. Designed for kids with autism, this app teaches users how to respond appropriately to “Wh” questions like who, what, and why.
