From cabinets and countertops to plumbing fixtures and appliances, there are many design decisions to make when you undergo kitchen remodeling. The first step is to determine the most effective way to use the space. Here are a few of the most common layouts to help you pick the right one for your home.

Planning a Kitchen Remodeling Project? 3 Layouts to Consider

1. Islands

If the room has ample square footage, an island in the center will provide additional storage and counter space. Depending on the size of the island, you may be able to include an overhang that will help the surface double as a breakfast bar.

You can also include appliances in the structure, like a sink, dishwasher, or wine fridge. This will free up other areas of the kitchen so you can have all the devices you want.

2. Peninsulas

Like an island, this provides additional cabinetry and countertops. It will also create a nook in the kitchen to help separate it from the rest of the room, which helps create distinct spaces in an open-plan home.

3. Galleys

Also known as a double-sided kitchen, this design features two rows of cabinets and countertops facing each other. This layout is ideal in smaller homes with narrower rooms.

A galley kitchen utilizes all of the square footage efficiently. To allow more than one person to use the space at once, avoid placing workspaces facing each other. For example, you can have a prep space across from a dishwasher.
