After getting your braces off, the soft tissue and bone around your teeth will need time to adjust to the new wire-free environment. Your orthodontist will provide a custom-made retainer to keep your teeth from moving as they settle into position. Being dilligent about wearing the appliance will prevent shifting and reduce the need for repeated straightening services. If you're preparing to have your braces removed, here's what you need to know about this next step.

Types of Retainers

Removable

There are two types of removable options. Hawley retainers have a metal wire connected to an acrylic plate that is molded to the top or bottom of your mouth. The wire lies flat against the outside of your teeth to keep them straight. An Essix retainer looks very similar to Invisalign® aligners and is a conservative option that fits over your teeth to keep them from moving.

Fixed

retainerFixed retainers consist of a metal wire bonded to the inside (the tongue side) of your teeth. They cannot be removed by the patient and are considered permanent.

How Long Do You Have to Wear Your Retainer?

Your orthodontist will likely recommend wearing your retainer full time for the first four to six months after getting your braces off. This excludes times when you’re eating or brushing your teeth. After the initial period, you’ll only need to wear it at night. This period will last between one and three years, depending on how well your teeth set into your jaw. Afterward, you should continue to wear one at least two to three times per-week while sleeping.
