The state of North Carolina requires every registered motor vehicle to pass an annual safety inspection. You cannot renew your registration until you have passed this test, so it’s important to know what this inspection includes how to prepare for it with the help of your auto mechanic.

A Guide to Vehicle Safety Inspections

Which parts of the vehicle are inspected?

During an inspection, a licensed auto mechanic will check that your vehicle’s safety equipment is in working order. They will check the headlights, accessory lights, and directional signals. The lights need to be properly aimed and in working order with no cracks in the lenses. They will test the steering, horn, exhaust system, mirrors, and windshield wipers.

The brakes, including the parking brake, must work. They will check that your tires do not have any damage and have at least 2/32 inch of tread depth. They will check that the window tinting has a light transmittance of at least 32% and that it is not red, yellow, or amber. They will check that there is no damage in the auto glass that obstructs your vision or affects the windshield wipers.

How do I prepare?

auto mechanicProper auto maintenance should keep your car in good enough condition to pass the test at any time. You can conduct a quick inspection of your own, however, before taking it in. Look for the most common problems, such as cracks in your windshield or light lenses. Inspect your tires for damage, and have a friend or family member check your lights as you switch them on and off.

What if I fail the inspection?

You can present your vehicle for inspection within 90 days of your renewal date. If your vehicle fails, you can present it for re-inspection within 60 days. Your auto mechanic will only look at the components that failed the initial inspection.

What’s the emissions inspection?

Certain counties in North Carolina, including Rowan County, require vehicles to pass an emissions inspection as well. Exempt vehicles include diesel-powered vehicles, those registered as farm vehicles, those manufactured before 1955, and some light-duty cars that are under three years old or with less than 70,000 miles.
