Looking to improve your bowling score? Whether you want to get a competitive edge on your next family outing or are hoping to develop some serious skills for your bowling league, there are a few typical mistakes that have a negative impact on your scores. Check out the guide below to learn more about some of the most common bowling mistakes and learn how to fix them before your next game.

3 Easy Fixes for Common Bowling Errors

1. Faulty Swing

Good bowling stems from a good arm-swing. However, many bowlers will start out with the ball at their chest. Not only can this throw off your stance, but holding the ball that far inside forces you to move your arm sideways and back around your body during your back-swing. Instead, try to hold the ball out to the side. With the ball in your bowling hand, this positioning will allow you to swing straight back and forth and improve your aim and overall motion. You can also point your feet directly toward your target to get a more accurate roll.

2. Improper Ball Release

bowlingTo get a perfect bowling shot, you need to roll the ball just past the foul line. Without proper timing and release, the ball is either dropped or lobbed. To correct dropping, don’t release before you’ve reached the foul line or before your foot starts to slide on its final step. If you end up lobbing your ball, you’re getting too much loft, which typically means your release is too late. To correct lobbing, remove your thumb right when your foot is sliding to the foul line, and let go with your remaining fingers a split second after.

3. Fast & Faulty Footwork

Bowlers who step and release the ball too quickly tend to be off-balance and rushed. To get a more consistent release, take your time and monitor your footwork. If the release is timed well and the ball is still off-center, you may be drifting. This just means that you move from your starting point when approaching the lane. Correct this by choosing the centermost floorboard as a starting point and following that board all the way through to your ball release. Have a friend or teammate assess your stepping pattern and try to course correct for a more accurate shot.
