Having a custom pool provides a host of benefits, from enjoying the outdoors to cooling off on a hot day. However, before you can make the most of this amenity, you need to ensure it’s prepped and ready for use. Now that winter is over, there are specific steps you’ll need to take to get your pool prepared for the warmer months. For the best results, utilize the tips listed below.

How to Get Your Custom Pool Ready for Summer

1. GET IT READY NOW! (UNLESS YOU HAVE A COVER!)

Don’t wait until the water warms and your beautiful pool turns green. Go ahead and have the water tested and balanced now and the pool will be ready when you are! Yay!!

If you have a cover, you can usually wait a little longer, but uncover at least a couple of days before you are ready to use the pool the first time because there will be some work to do! First, remove any bugs, debris, leaves, and dirt that might have settled on top of your pool cover over the winter. Once it’s clear, take off the cover and lay it flat on the ground. Using a pressure washer or hose, wash off the cover. Allow the cover to air dry for one to two days, fold it, and put it in storage. Ensure you stow it away in a dry area so that it doesn’t develop mold or mildew while it’s not in use.

2. Clean the Pool

Keep your pool clean even when you aren’t using it! Everything will last longer-equipment, pool surfaces, etc. Brushing the sides of your pool can never be done too much.

If your pool has been covered, you’ll need to address and dirt or debris that accumulated beneath the surface. Start by skimming the surface with a net, and then brush and vacuum the sides. Settlement on the bottom can generally be vacuumed to waste.

3. Adjust the Chemicals

To keep your pool safe and comfortable to use, test and balance the water. Check your stabilizer levels first to make sure that they are not too high or low. Once your stabilizer levels are in range, adjust the PH of the water. Then shock the pool to kill off lingering algae and bacteria, after your initial scrub-down. After the shock treatment has had time to set in, test your water supply, and adjust the chemical levels accordingly. Specifically, focus on addressing the alkalinity, pH, and calcium hardness levels.
